Take the hearing test

A pure-tone threshold check per ear plus a high-frequency ceiling — a screen to make you take your ears seriously, not a diagnosis.

The Hearing Test under Diagnostics is a pure-tone screen. For each ear and test frequency a sine tone rises from silence; you press a button the moment you hear it, and that level is your threshold. A second sub-test finds your high-frequency ceiling. It is not scored and has no mastery bar.

This is not a medical test. It runs through consumer headphones at an uncalibrated volume. If the result worries you, see an audiologist.

Before you start

  • Use headphones. Each tone is panned hard left or right; speakers will not isolate the ears.
  • Set a comfortable volume now and do not change it during the test.
  • Find a quiet room. Background noise raises every threshold.

Running it

  1. Open Hearing Test from the dashboard and press Start test.
  2. The screen shows which ear and which frequency is playing. The tone starts at silence and rises slowly.
  3. Press I hear it the moment you notice it. If it reaches its top level unheard, press Didn't hear it.
  4. Frequencies and ears are presented in a randomised order.
  5. The high-frequency ceiling test follows: a very high tone steps down in pitch until you hear it. Press I hear it as soon as you do.
  6. Results draw as a curve per ear, with a 0–100 score alongside the threshold in dB, and the ceiling reported as "up to X kHz" — or "no ceiling detected".

You can retake at any time; a retake starts clean.

Reading the result

  • A lower threshold at a frequency means you heard a quieter tone there. The score maps that to 0–100 so the two ears compare at a glance.
  • The ceiling is where age-related loss shows first, which is why the descending list is denser between 12 and 18 kHz.
  • The useful signal is the difference between your ears, and change over time on the same headphones at the same volume. Absolute numbers depend on your gear.

Hearing-test results stay on this device. They are health-adjacent, and account data is stored in plain text, so they are deliberately left out of account sync.
