RoomSense
The acoustics reference for live sound — room modes and RT60, SPL and hearing safety with the European level rules, LUFS, delay alignment, psychoacoustics and an indicative level monitor with a show protocol.
On this page
RoomSense is the acoustics workbook you would carry if it fitted in a pocket. Type in a room and it computes the modes, the Schroeder frequency, an RT60 estimate from real absorption data and how much absorber would fix it. It checks exposure against the rules that apply where you work — US, EU and the audience rules of Germany, Switzerland, the WHO and others — meters LUFS, aligns a delay speaker, and on the Level tab runs an indicative level monitor with a show protocol.
Who it is for
- Live sound engineers who want to know the room before soundcheck and align the delay stack by numbers.
- System techs — crossover references, air absorption, back-row prediction, sub alignment.
- Production managers and venue staff responsible for exposure limits, the correction value and the measurement protocol.
- Studio builders, students and educators — modes, RT60 and treatment with the physics visible.
What makes it different
- One suite, shared context. The room feeds the modes, the RT60, the Results tab and the printout; the air temperature feeds every delay.
- The textbook models, named. Eyring with ISO 9613-1 air absorption, DIN 18041 targets, EBU Tech 3276, ISO 226, ISO 7029:2017, IEC 61672 weighting, ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128, NIOSH / OSHA, EU 2003/10/EC.
- The rule where you play. DIN 15905-5, V-NISSG, WHO, the Dutch covenant, the French décret, VLAREM and HSE guidance — limit, averaging window and duties, with the source and the date of the summary.
- Venue profiles that sync with your account, and a working state that survives a reload.
- Phones, tablets and laptops, in 11 languages.
Pages in this guide
- Getting started — the room, its modes and its RT60 in five minutes.
- Estimate RT60 and size the treatment — materials, audience, and how much treatment.
- Exposure, hearing protection and the crew's day — exposure times, hearing protection, the crew's day.
- The rule where you play, the correction value and the protocol — audience rules, correction value, level monitor, protocol.
- FAQ and Troubleshooting.
RoomSense is free with a Squaresmile account. It predicts, references and — on the Level tab — monitors indicatively. A browser with a phone or laptop microphone is not a class 1 / 2 sound level meter. Use it before REW, Smaart or your class meter, not instead of them.
Checking a file (a mix, an episode, a show file) for LUFS, true peak and clips has a tool of its own: LoudSense. The LUFS tab here keeps the live input meter.
