Troubleshooting

No sound, no microphone, a note that looks wrong, a link that opens differently — and what to do about each.

Open PitchSense

Symptom Likely cause & fix
Play button flashes but nothing is heard The Volume slider is at 0, or the device is muted. Raise the slider, unmute the device and tap again.
No sound on an iPhone The ring/silent switch mutes web audio. Flip it to ring, raise the volume, tap again.
Low notes are silent Phone and laptop speakers play little below about 80 Hz. Use headphones or the PA for the kick-to-key table.
Tone sounds harsh Wave is set to Square or Saw. Switch to Sine for a clean reference.
Microphone access was blocked. Permission was denied. Allow the microphone for squaresmile.de in the browser's site settings, reload, and tap Start listening again.
No microphone found. No input device is connected or enabled. Plug in or enable a microphone and start again.
The microphone is in use by another app. A DAW, a call or another tab holds the microphone. Close it and start again.
Microphone not available in this browser. The browser does not expose a microphone. Use a current version of Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
Tuner shows listening… but no note The signal is too quiet. Play one note, closer to the microphone.
Tuner shows no clear pitch The sound is noise or several notes at once. Play one note; a chord can also give a misleading reading.
Tuner shows above range The pitch is above about 3 kHz, for example a feedback ring. Type the Hz from your analyser into Hz → Note instead.
Bass or kick reads nothing or jumps The microphone hardly hears the fundamental. Hold the phone close to the cabinet or drum, or use an interface, and give the note a moment.
Tuner stopped on its own The tab was hidden; the microphone is released on purpose. Tap Start listening again.
Tuner reads sharp or flat on every note Check the A4 reference at the top — the tuner follows it.
The note for a known frequency looks wrong A non-440 A4 is selected, possibly from a shared link (a4= in the address) or your saved setting. Tap 440.
A shared link opens with different values Only the frequency, note, harmonic and A4 are in the link. Wave and volume are personal and not shared.
440,5 reads as 4405 Hz You are on an old cached copy. Reload once; the current version reads a decimal comma.
Note names show H instead of B The tool is in German, which calls B natural H. Switch the platform language, or read H as B.
Search finds nothing Search matches note names (C#4, Db4), MIDI numbers and the start of a frequency. 440 works; 40 in the middle of a number does not.
Empty converter shows a dash The Hz field is empty or not a positive number. Type a frequency.
A4 reference changed on its own You are signed in and changed it on another device; the setting syncs to the account. Set it again here.

Nothing plays at all

  1. Check the device is not muted and the Volume slider is above 0.
  2. On an iPhone, flip the ring/silent switch to ring.
  3. Tap a play button once more, then try another tab or app to confirm the device plays sound.

The microphone tuner never starts

  1. Look for a blocked-microphone icon in the address bar and allow it.
  2. Close any other app or tab that uses the microphone.
  3. Reload the page and tap Start listening again.
