No sound, no microphone, a note that looks wrong, a link that opens differently — and what to do about each.

| Symptom | Likely cause & fix |

| Play button flashes but nothing is heard | The Volume slider is at 0, or the device is muted. Raise the slider, unmute the device and tap again. |
| First tap on a phone plays nothing | The audio engine wakes on the first tap. Tap the play button once more. |
| Tone sounds harsh | Wave is set to Square or Saw. Switch to Sine for a clean reference. |
| Microphone access was blocked. | Permission was denied. Allow the microphone for squaresmile.de in the browser's site settings, reload, and tap Start listening again. |
| Microphone not available in this browser. | The browser does not expose a microphone. Use a current version of Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge. |
| Tuner shows listening… but no note | The signal is too quiet or unclear. Play one note, closer to the microphone; chords and noise give no reading. |
| Tuner stopped on its own | The tab was hidden or the phone locked; the microphone is released on purpose. Tap Start listening again. |
| Tuner reads sharp or flat on every note | Check the A4 reference in the header — the tuner follows it. |
| The note for a known frequency looks wrong | A non-440 A4 is selected, possibly restored from a shared link (a4= in the address) or your saved preference. Set the select back to 440 Hz. |
| A shared link opens with different values | Only the frequency, note, harmonic and A4 are in the link. Wave and volume are personal and not shared. |
| Search finds nothing | Search matches note names (C#4, Db4), MIDI numbers and the start of a frequency. 440 works; 40 in the middle of a number does not. |
| Empty converter shows a dash | The Hz field is empty or not a positive number. Type a frequency. |
| A4 reference changed on its own | You are signed in and changed it on another device; the setting syncs to the account. Set it again here. |
Nothing plays at all
- Check the device is not muted and the Volume slider is above 0.
- Tap any play button once more — the first tap on a phone only wakes the audio engine.
- Try another browser tab or app to confirm the device plays sound.
The microphone tuner never starts
- Look for a blocked-microphone icon in the address bar and allow it.
- Make sure no other app holds the microphone exclusively.
- Reload the page and tap Start listening again.
