Tune from the microphone

Start the live tuner, read the note, frequency and cents from what you play, and know when it is listening.

The Live Tuner panel listens through your device's microphone, detects the pitch of whatever you play or sing, and drives the same cents gauge the converter uses. It is a microphone tuner, not a strobe tuner: accuracy depends on the microphone and the room.

Start and stop

  1. Scroll to Live Tuner and tap Start listening.
  2. The browser asks for microphone permission the first time. Allow it.
  3. The status under the gauge reads listening… and the button changes to Stop.
  4. Play or sing a single note. The readout shows the nearest note, the detected frequency to one decimal, and the cents deviation. Within ±5 cents the status says in tune; otherwise sharp or flat, and the needle moves accordingly.
  5. Tap Stop when you are done. The microphone is released and the readout clears.

The tuner follows the A4 reference selected in the header, so a 442 Hz ensemble tunes to 442 Hz.

What the tuner listens for

  • One note at a time. The detector looks for a single clear pitch between 20 Hz and 4 kHz. Chords, noise and very quiet input give no reading; the last good reading stays on screen until the next one.
  • Raw input. Echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain are switched off on the microphone stream so the pitch is not processed before it is measured.
  • No monitoring. The microphone is analysed only, never routed to the speakers, so it cannot feed back.

When it stops by itself

The tuner releases the microphone whenever the tab is hidden — switching apps, locking the phone, or moving to another tab — so the recording indicator does not stay on in the background. When you come back, tap Start listening again.

The tuner and the play buttons share one audio engine. If you start the tuner right after the page loads and hear nothing from the play buttons, tap a play button once — that first tap wakes the audio engine on iOS.
