Make it wide. Keep it mono-safe.

WidthForge splits your signal into four bands and sets the stereo width of each, from mono to 400 %. Width only scales the Side signal, so the mono sum never changes — and every band shows, in dB, what it would lose on a mono PA, a phone speaker or a broadcast fold-down. Before and after.

The WidthForge plugin window with the preset Wide Pop: the Mid/Side spectrum with the gold Mid and blue Side curves, the crossover markers at 200 Hz, 2 kHz and 8 kHz and the Bass Mono zone below 90 Hz; the band widths Bass 90 %, Mids 105 %, Mid-High 120 % and Highs 135 %, each with its correlation and its loss in mono (Highs −2.3 dB, in amber); the stereo-width strip, the Lissajous scope with correlation +0.95 and −0.1 dB mono loss for the whole mix, and the LUFS, RMS and true-peak meters.

How it works

Insert. Widen. Check in mono.

01

On a track, bus or master

Insert WidthForge on anything stereo — or on a mono source, which Stereoize can turn into stereo.

02

Start from a preset

26 factory presets in six groups, from Gentle Widen and Drum Bus to Live FOH Safe. The arrows step through them; a star marks one you have changed.

03

Set the four widths

Turn the band knobs, or grab a band in the spectrum and drag it up or down. Drag the numbered markers to move the crossovers.

04

Read MONO, then listen

Close to 0 dB is mono-safe; amber or red means that band thins out or cancels. Switch on Phase Guard, press COMPARE and hear the original at matched level.

The sound

Width where you want it. Mono where you need it.

Four bands, 0 to 400 %

A phase-aligned Linkwitz-Riley crossover splits Bass, Mids, Mid-High and Highs. Keep the lows tight, focus the mids, open up the air. Crossover moves glide without zipper noise and can never cross each other.

Mono loss per band, in dB

Under every band: its correlation and MONO, the level it loses when summed to mono — with a tick for the input value. The same pair for the whole mix, so you know before the PA tells you.

Phase Guard

One switch, and no band ever goes out of phase: each band's width is limited just enough to keep its correlation at or above zero. The band shows how much it took — say −42 %.

Bass Mono and Recover Sides

Everything below a frequency you set (20–500 Hz) goes to the centre, at 12, 24 or 48 dB/oct. Recover Sides folds the removed low Side energy back into the mono sum, rotated by 90°, instead of throwing it away.

Stereoize

An all-pass decorrelator turns a mono source — keys, a DI guitar, a synth — into stereo above a Focus frequency. No delay, so no Haas echo, and the mono sum does not change.

Auto Gain, Global and Tilt

Auto Gain keeps each band's level steady as its width changes, so wider never just means louder. Global scales all four bands with one knob; Tilt moves width between the lows and the highs.

Inside

Guarded, mapped, monitored.

WidthForge with Phase Guard and Auto Gain switched on, preset Super Wide (changed): widths Bass 100 %, Mids 140 %, Mid-High 180 % and Highs 320 %; Phase Guard holds the Highs band back by 42 % and GUARD shows in the stereo-width strip; the Polar scope draws its ±45° safe lines and marks the samples outside them red as out of phase; Bass Mono at 120 Hz, 48 dB/oct; the whole mix at correlation +0.91 and −0.2 dB in mono.
Phase Guard on a Super Wide setting: the Highs at 320 % are held back by 42 %, and the Polar scope paints anything outside its ±45° safe lines red.
WidthForge with the preset Live FOH Safe while in-plugin MIDI learn waits: the banner over the spectrum reads “MIDI LEARN: move a controller for Global Width (click here to cancel)”; Phase Guard on, Bass Mono at 140 Hz, 48 dB/oct, band widths 80, 100, 110 and 115 %, every band within −1.1 dB in mono, the Level scope showing where the energy sits in the stereo field, and the mix at correlation +0.97 and −0.1 dB mono loss.
Live FOH Safe with MIDI learn waiting for a controller for Global Width — one fader for the whole image. The Level scope shows where the energy sits.
WidthForge with the preset Drum Bus while listening: the amber banner reads “MONITORING: COMPARE + SOLO MID-HIGH HIGHS (output is not the mix)”; the Mid-High and Highs bands are soloed, so the spectrum shows only the top end, the Compare button plays the input level-matched and reads BEFORE 0.7 dB, the crossovers sit at 150 Hz, 2.50 kHz and 8 kHz, and the scope reads a mix width of 0.14 at the input and 0.72 at the output.
Compare with the two top bands soloed: you hear just those bands before processing, level-matched — and the amber banner says the output is not the mix.

See it, hear it, play it live

Built for the stage as much as the studio.

A spectrum you can grab

Mid in gold, Side in blue, the input in grey as a before/after overlay, with the four bands drawn in. Drag a band to change its width, drag a marker to move a crossover.

Scopes and meters

Lissajous, Polar with ±45° safe lines, and Polar Level. A correlation history of about 17 seconds, so a short phase problem does not slip past. Momentary and integrated LUFS, RMS and true peak with a resettable maximum.

Compare, honestly

Compare plays the input phase-aligned and level-matched, so you judge width, not loudness. Solo a band and hear just that band before and after. Monitor in Mono, Side, or Delta — only what WidthForge changes.

Safe on a show

Zero latency, under 1 % of one core, click-free switching and a bit-exact bypass. An amber MONITORING banner appears whenever you are not hearing the mix, and sessions always reopen in normal listening.

MIDI learn on every control

Right-click, move a fader, done (VST3 and standalone). 14-bit controllers, soft takeover, momentary buttons and Program Change for presets. Every sound parameter is automatable for your host's own MIDI learn too.

Quick to work with

A/B slots, undo and redo of your own edits, user presets. Type a value ("2.5k"), Shift-drag for fine moves, LINK to move all widths together. A resizable window from 75 to 200 %, and a ? tour of every section.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Which formats and systems?

macOS 11 or later: VST3, AU and a standalone app, one universal build for Apple Silicon and Intel. Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit): VST3 and the standalone app. It runs in any host that loads VST3 or AU plugins — Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, Bitwig, Studio One, FL Studio, MainStage, Live Professor and the like. There is no AAX version, so not in Pro Tools.

Will a wider mix sound worse in mono?

Not from the width itself. Width and Stereoize only change the Side signal, so the mono sum stays exactly the same. What can vanish in mono is the Side content — and that is what the MONO readout of every band shows you, in dB. Switch on Phase Guard and no band can go out of phase.

Does it add latency?

No. WidthForge reports zero samples of latency: every stage is IIR or all-pass, with no lookahead and no FFT in the audio path. It uses under 1 % of one core with every feature on, measured at a 64-sample buffer on an Apple M1 Pro.

Can I use it live?

Yes, it was built for that. Zero latency, every control MIDI-mappable, click-free switching, and an amber MONITORING banner whenever Solo, Compare or a monitor mode changes the output. Presets and A/B never touch those listening settings, and a session always reopens in normal listening. Three Live presets are included: Live FOH Safe, Live Playback / Keys and Live Mono PA / Fills.

How do I control it from MIDI?

In the VST3 and the standalone app: right-click any control, choose MIDI Learn and move a knob or fader. Mappings are saved with the session, or as the default for every new instance; 14-bit controllers are detected, and soft takeover, momentary buttons and Program Change for presets are options. No CC is assigned out of the box. In every format, all sound parameters are automatable, so your host's own MIDI learn works too — in Logic, use Controller Assignments.

Will my WidthForge 1 sessions still open?

Yes. The parameter IDs and ranges are unchanged, so version 1 sessions and automation load as before. The old Mono Bass becomes Bass Mono at the first crossover with a 48 dB/oct slope, and the old Mono Check becomes the Mono monitor mode.

Is there copy protection or an online check?

No. No iLok, no activation, no internet connection. You buy it once on Gumroad and download the installers — install it on your studio machine and your live laptop. Every 2.x update is free and appears in your Gumroad library.

macOS or Windows warns me on first launch — why?

The installers are not signed with an Apple or Microsoft developer certificate yet. On macOS 15 or newer, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway; on macOS 11–14, right-click the installer and choose Open. Windows SmartScreen: More info → Run anyway. The READ ME FIRST file in the download walks you through it.

Ready when you are

Wide in the headphones. Still there in mono.

WidthForge on a bus or the master: four bands of width, the mono loss of each in dB, and Phase Guard when it has to be safe. €19, once.
